Breastfeeding Multiples

Are you wondering if you will be able to successfully breastfeed two or more babies? Are you finding it a challenge to breastfeed two or more babies? Not to worry, you are not alone and yes, it is possible. Even mothers of singleton children can find breastfeeding is not without its challenges. Although babies are born with the instincts to breastfeed, it does not mean they have mastered the required skills to do so upon emerging from the womb. Both Mom and baby(ies) are on a (sometimes steep) learning curve and feeding skills need to be learned. It is not unusual for parents of multiples to feel overwhelmed trying to juggle two or more babies (and sometimes other children as well), getting them into a routine, recognizing their babies’ “messages,” wondering if Mom has enough milk and if the babies are feeding well. Coupled with sleep deprivation, Moms can soon find themselves feeling inadequate in the breastfeeding department.

You are not alone. Don't give up on your goal to breastfeed your babies. Multiple Birth Canada’s Breastfeeding Support Network is made up of families who have been where you are right now. Or maybe you haven't had your babies yet and want to equip yourself with as much knowledge about breastfeeding as possible in advance of their arrival. You’ve come to the right place.

Being prepared is an excellent first step and we can help. With a wide variety of resources, literature and people you can count on, you, your partner AND your babies will soon be comfortable and breastfeeding with confidence.

The Breastfeeding Support Network is a work in progress. Be sure to check back often as our Fact Sheets and support literature are updated and increased.

Miscellaneous News & Information

Ottawa Mom of multiples has put together a support group for breastfeeding
mothers of multiples:

"Hello - I am running a MB breastfeeding support group in Ottawa that I would love if MBC knew about and shared the information if anyone is interested. At the
moment, meetings are once per month. Discussion is open, sharing information
about getting started, what to expect, area resources and breastfeeding
related issues.  Most importantly, we provide cheer-leading to those who are
struggling at any point and need some moral support. Those interested  can
contact Erin at werehip@magma.ca  - Many thanks."

If you are interested in getting Moms together for multiple-birth
breastfeeding sharing and caring in your community, Erin will be pleased to
share with you how she got her group started.  Please feel free to contact
Erin for more information.
